The Emerald Art Center presents: “Pressing Matters 2018,” Whiteaker Printmakers’ second juried printmaking exhibition.
Thirty contemporary works selected by juror Margaret Prentice will showcase traditional printmaking techniques including etching, monotype, mezzotint, woodcut, linocut, screenprinting, and lithography.
Also showing is “On the Sidelines” photographs by featured member, Diane Ketelsen.
Diane Ketelsen’s black and white digital photo essay is something you don’t see very often. The artist has managed to turn herself inside out on film, to the extent that such a feat is humanly possible. Surprises are many, ranging from the soft, subtly lit volumes bearing discordant sharp edges in a film Noir stew, to the strained compositions wherein objects play more intimately in relationship to the photographer than other humans.
“Most of the photographs are of self-portraits and views from my perspective. How I see things. Living with Cerebral Palsy and using a wheelchair in my everyday life.”
Ketelsen takes us into her world in ways that are very personal, extremely vulnerable and incredibly moving. She shows us not only her challenges but her strength and faith in beautiful, light forged, dimensions that are much deeper than the prints.
Plus new work from members of the Emerald Art Center.
These exhibitions run from November 6th to 30th.
Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 – 4,
and on Friday, November 9, 5-8 pm, during the Downtown Springfield Second Friday Artwalk.
