Drawing for the Absolute Beginner –   

Focusing on travel and daily life journals using pencil, pen, and watercolor.

A series of 6, two hour classes each Monday. For the first hour we will focus on drawing exercises and techniques, second hour focusing on practice and producing artwork.

Open to adults over 18.

Do you think you “can’t draw” but want to? I will show you that you can! In this class we will be expressing feelings and emotions in an art journal, while also learning how to sketch, draw, and paint images that satisfy you about travel and every day scenes.

Colored Pencil Drawing at Emerald Art Center –   

The purpose of the class is for a student to learn how to draw with colored pencils by exploring the different techniques. The instruction includes learning about colored pencil basic tools (paper, pencils etc), color theory, how to lay down color, layering the pencils, and different techniques to create a beautiful piece of art while continuing to developing your artist’s eye, to name a few. This is done though lecture, demonstrations, exercises and drawing.  Basic drawing skills required.

The course objective is to teach people about colored pencils as a drawing medium, through examples and then practicing in and outside of class. Students will be able to pick projects they want to work on.

This is a course that can be repeated to improve skills or a person may start at any time and receive the basic education while seeing the progress of the other students.

Figure Drawing – every Wednesday night 6:30-9:00 p.m.

Figurative drawing sessions have a model who at the end of each session chooses her favorite drawing for display in the gallery for the week.

Cost per session is $6.00 for 2 1/2 hours of drawing.

Ben Swetland earned a BA in art history from Columbia University. His interest in the history of art has informed his own artistic practice and approach to teaching. With a background in drawing, oil painting, intaglio printmaking, and collage, he believes that – with effort and patience – anyone can learn to draw.
